Artists absorbed in making sculptures with artist Seth Clark at our 2nd VACOP Workshop on Friday, October 16, 2015.
We began the day by meeting Seth Clark at his exhibition at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 2015 Emerging Artist of the Year: Seth Clark. Seth walked the students through his artistic process, which includes meticulous collaging, painting, and sculpting.
The artists were interested in the imagery depicted in Seth’s work. They had a number of questions about his ideas, and the application of materials in each piece.
Students sketched a few of their favorite pieces to use as inspiration for their own projects back in the studio.
Assisted by artist Derek Reese, Seth demonstrated how he turns some of his sketches into 3-dimensional sculptures. Artists continued developing their drawings, which would become sculptures as well.
Artists “traced” their compelling drawings with balsa wood, implementing techniques Seth uses in his own work.
Interesting forms emerged throughout the day.
Artists were excited about the project and worked tirelessly all day.
Many of the VACOP artists are interested in displaying their final sculptures at their end of year exhibition at the AIU.
