Chris McGinnis at Carrie Blast Furnace – Sand Molds and Metal Casting – October 2017

Students began by touring the historic Carrie Furnaces site in Rankin, PA. A former industrial site, students learned the history of the steel mills in Pittsburgh. Chris shared about his painting process, which explores and depicts post-industrial sites in the region. Students then carved their own designs into pre-formed sand molds to be cast in aluminum at a metal-casting workshop at the Carrie Furnaces, a workshop uniquely offered at the site.
